The Oculus Quest 2 Is Getting A New Way To Play PC Games

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to connect your Oculus Quest 2 to a PC, without a wire?

There is! It’s called Virtual Desktop and it’s been around for a little while now. So why does the Oculus Quest 2 need Oculus Air Link, the upcoming wireless update that’s coming soon to the headset? Because, as great as Virtual Desktop is, it can be a little bit fiddly to implement.

First, if you want to play PC VR games through Virtual Desktop, you’ve got to enable developer mode on your headset, then mess around a bit more. It works well, but if Oculus Air Link gives us a quicker solution, we’re definitely on board. We’ve certainly had mixed results with a USB-C cable.

Why bother at all? Because while the Oculus Quest 2 is great, its processing power is limited compare to the meatiness of a PC. Hence while it can be used to play games like The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, it’s unlikely we’ll see Half Life: Alyx on the headset. Connect your Quest 2 to your PC and you’re able to play virtually every Steam VR game.

So when is Oculus Air Link arriving? Oculus are going to roll out the v28 PC software update shortly, which will let you enable the feature. However, it’s still experimental, so results may vary. We plan on putting it through its paces and letting you know what we find but for now, it’s a waiting game.
